I've been promising to update my profile for ages, but as usual completely failed to do so because I was planning some elaborate fancy doodad involving epic html skills, which I do not have. Finally, I noticed that it's now 3 years out of date, and I figured I better do something about it. So I did. Ta da!

I'm British, 23 years old at the time of writing (and didn't that last year sneak up fast?) and I do like to write. I also like to draw, and have been vaguely attempting to combine the two into an awesome comic-like creation since I was 17. Well, I say attempting, but I really mean vaguely thinking and scribbling the odd thing down. I have a full set of characters and 3 years worth of plot, but no drawing skills to speak of as yet.
INTERNET-SPECIFIC PROFILE STUFF:
If I've friended you, or you're thinking of friending me, you may want to check this bit out first to save time.
♦There's tonnes of evidence for evolution.
♦"God did it" is not a scientific explanation.
♦They have not yet invented the political party that encapsulates my beliefs, but the closest would be a sort of hands-off liberal socialism with bite and without CCTV.
♦As a general rule, if it doesn't hurt anyone it doesn't bother me, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to see pictures of it.
♦I prefer my porn in literary form.
♦Furries don't bother me, nor do other harmless folk with weird kinks.
♦I am strongly against people who take fandom too seriously.
♦I believe in the principle of 'innocent unless proven guilty' even though British government insists on treating everyone like criminals.
♦I honestly don't think I know enough about international events like the war in Iraq to have an intelligent opinion.
♦I would support a system that weighted people's votes according to their IQ, if there was an accurate way of measuring and defining IQ - but I would feel guilty about it.
♦There is no excuse for being a jerk on the internet.
♦I already know more than I really wanted to know about Christianity and Islam, but you can tell me about any other religions if you like.
[If I think of any more I may add them here]
NON-INTERNET SPECIFIC STUFF:
I finally finished the last exam I'll ever do and graduated from Manchester Uni the other year with a degree in a life science (though which one is a closely-guarded secret) and a burning desire to make the letters GM stand for Giant Mutant. I'm currently studying for a PhD, which takes up most of my time and effort but does mean I can wander round in a lab coat all day and pretend like I'm an adult.
I live in The North, currently Scotland (but South Scotland - do try to keep up) in a flat with a cat imaginatively called Cat and two rats called Moz and Psycho Paul. No, they do not live in the same room. I also have a garden, and a weed-related guilt complex.
I am a huge fan of science-fiction and fantasy at the less wet end of the spectrum (more Sergei Lukyanenko than Mercedes Lackey if you get me) although I do still enjoy cheesy formulaic crap if it's done with a sense of humour. I read a lot, although less than I did when I was a teenager with spare time and grudges. I watch a lot of TV, and still read the odd bit of fanfiction. I even still think occasionally about writing some, mainly when I get random emails from reviewers wondering if I've died. Most of my fanfic, and in fact most of my stuff in general, goes unfinished. I'm too easily distracted by the world in general and a new series of Dr Who in particular. You can guess the likelihood of me finishing something by the number of new series that have come out since I started writing - if it's more than two, there's very little hope.
FANDOMS:
I've been obsessing over fandoms before I knew the meaning of the word, and well before I was introduced to fanfiction at the tender age of 14. Favourite fandom obsessivenesses in chronological order (hopefully) include:
(under 9) Maid Marian and Her Merry Men - Not a fandom as such, just one of the best kids tv shows ever. And it had Danny John-Jules in it. So yeah.
(9+) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - This is one obsession that never went away. It's just too damn good and too damn funny. Adams, hope you RIP (but I bet you're laughing, wherever you are).
(10+)Red Dwarf - Oh yes, highly awesome. I heard a rumour of a movie and I hope, I do so hope it's true.
(11+) The Discworld Series - I still enjoy the books hugely, although when I began to learn some history and discovered he didn't make everything up I was most disappointed
(some time in high school) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The original and best angsty-teenage-vampire show around. Twilight, eat your heart out. Buffy had fun, angst, a sense of humour, angst, sexy James Marsters with his shirt off, angst, dire British stereotypes and in short just about everything a teenaged girl could ask for. Brilliant! I never got into Angel though - for some reason I seriously dislike the mopey, whiney bastard.
Stargate - When I had access to Sky tv I watched all the stargates religiously and enjoyed every minute of it, although the fandom I mostly ignored. Weird.
(during a period where I was forced to watch stuff that wasn't scifi, and discovered that I liked it) Coupling & Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps- two shows about 20-somethings trying to get dates and generally live their lives. Two very funny shows. Coupling had the wonderful character Geoff (or Jeff? Whichever) who invented such oddities as the Giggle-loop (increasing urge to laugh while something bad/serious is happening, such as a funeral) and The Sock Gap (time during which a man must remove his socks before sex in order to avoid being a naked man in socks). Also Nose Avoidance Tilting - that little head-tilt people do before they kiss that lets everyone know that's what they're intending to do. Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps had Johnny Keo, the obligatory effeminate and probably gay male character whose job in any sitcom is to attract physical and mental damage as amusingly as possible. Also Louise, an amazingly self-centred sociopath with a voice that kills bats. It's still going sort of, but I think it went horribly wrong after Johnny tried and failed to jump the shark.
The League of Gentlemen. Not to be confused with the Extraordinary League of Gentlemen, The LoG are a strange (very) bunch of Northerners (yay!) who introduced me to the idea that horror can be both funny and scary at the same time. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't translate well to anyone overseas, but all the same they are brilliant. And yes, the sign outside Royston Vasey - the one that says "You'll never leave"- actually exists. It's outside Colne in Lancashire, which a real, weird and vaguely scary place.
Spaced - If you wondered what Simon Pegg and his mates were doing before he turned up in movies and that, this was it. Brilliant, funny and they did a Matrix spoof episode starring John Simm. So woo.
(Since I stopped paying attention to how old I was):
The Mighty Boosh. No words can explain the Mighty Boosh and their awesome powers. They have a green cockney demon with a polo mint for an eye, a shaman with a gorilla for a familiar who goes shopping at shamansburys, and a cast of characters who appear to be playing their crazy selves only more so, apart from the guy who does Bob Fossil - apparently he's had to tone himself down a bit for the show. Yet another prime example of why drugs and tv go so well together.
Doctor Who - needs no explanation or description. It's now the longest running sci-fi show ever, and has long been the best. I was going to make some slight about Captain Kirk and his lack of sexual ambiguity but then my brain presented me with Captain Kirk and Captain Jack in one sentence - and then hid. I also enjoy/ed Torchwood, even the first series, although I'm still annoyed that they killed Owen. Again. Bastards!
Life on Mars - The fandom that got me to join livejournal many moons ago, and still one of my all time favourites. I have a 6-foot bus-stop promo poster of it on my wall. Mmm...
I'm less keen on teh sequel, but I suspect that's because 1) John Simm isn't in it, and I loved his general crazy-guy acting and 2) the female lead annoyed me for reasons that probably have nothing to do with jealousy.
Reaper - Funny and enjoyable even though I managed to miss most of them. Someday I will catch up!
Demons - The Last Surviving Van Helsing must carry on the... yeah, you get the idea. Fun teen-aged drama in the Buffy vein but with Philip Glenister. I'm still amused by the way he semi-slips into Gene Hunt persona when he shouts.
Being Human - My most current obsession, and an absolutely brilliant show in so many ways. There's humour, violence, sex (bit embarrassing but there nonetheless), vampires, werewolves - there's just no way I could not like this show.
I should be working, revising, reading and at some point I said I'd draw a comic. But I'm probably playing MonstersGame instead. Rawr.
